Integrated Pest Management

Think First. Spray Last.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a systematic approach to pest control, which includes visual inspection, recommendations, treatment and return visits (if necessary) to address pest conflict situations. This sustainable, science-based, decision-making process combines biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools to identify, manage and reduce risk from pests; and implements tools and strategies in a way that minimizes overall economic, health and environmental risks while addressing a pest conflict.

IPM explores diverse options for pest mitigation; including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides. IPM is not a single pest control method but, rather, a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls. In practicing IPM, we are aware of the potential for pest remediation and follow a four-tiered approach. The concept of successful IPM strategy is rooted in these four basic principals:

  1. Identify pests and monitor progress.

  2. Set action thresholds.

  3. Prevent.

  4. Control.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tactics focus on a multi-pronged approach to pest mitigation. Least-toxic effective methods are used before more toxic ones whenever possible. IPM strives for an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. For example, a cockroach infestation is not likely to be resolved with the use of chemical pesticides alone; it requires reduction of harborage sites and sanitation practices that reduce food opportunities in conjunction with chemical control. As such, we include recommendations which often exceed the use of chemicals to attain success.

Successful IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

Monadnock Pest & Wildlife Services utilizes an IPM approach to both pest and wildlife control situations to ensure all viable options are explored and considered, thus having the least impact on the environment as possible.
